What is HIV Sperm Wash?

40+ years

Combined Experience

Western Fertility Instiutute employs a method of washing sperm that allows HIV positive men to have children safely using assisted reproductive technologies.

HIV positive men who are taking antiretroviral therapy and have an undetectable viral load can donate sperm, which is double washed to remove any lingering HIV particles from the surface of the sperm cells. The sperm can then be used safely. This method does not reduce the viability of the sperm, while it does reduce the risk of HIV transmission to the embryo and surrogate mother to as low as humanly possible.

The HIV Sperm Wash Process

SCREENING

This is the first step. During the FDA ID Screening you will consult with an infectious disease specialist so we can derive the ideal process plan for you.

TESTING

The second step involves testing your blood. Here we will follow a testing protocol specific to HIV.

SEMEN ANALYSIS

The thrird step involves testing your semen. We will analyze the volume, concentration, the motility, and morphology (shape/form).

PREPARATION

Step four involves semen preparation for IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and Cryopreservation.

HIV PCR

The fifth step includes running a HIV Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test to determine the viral load in the prepared sample.

IVF

During the final step we will perform in vitro fertilization (IVF) with ICSI at Western Fertility Institute or ship out samples.

LGBTQ+

At Western Fertility, we work with many LGBTQ+ couples and individuals and understand the unique challenges they may face on their path to parenthood. We believe everyone has the right to become a parent if they wish to and are there to make their dream become a reality. If you are HIV-positive, you can still become a parent and have a healthy baby.

Our sperm washing program combined with egg donation and surrogacy has been efficient and has yielded extraordinary results. We look forward to assist you with you parenthood journey!
